Panzer’s touts itself as a Jewish deli, but the shop is so much more than that. Located off St. John’s Wood High Street, beloved by locals since 1944, the grocery store and deli stacks gleaming shelves with everything from imported American cake mix to Asian salad dressing to British-grown produce. A recent renovation only made Panzer’s more desirable: There’s now a sushi counter, outdoor cafe, and a chic coffee bar, all of which bring in customers throughout the day to socialize and dine.
The deli itself sells Panzer’s famous smoked salmon alongside salads, sandwiches, pickles, olives, and (of course) the requisite chopped liver. There’s a bit of something from all of the popular British purveyors, including Estate Dairy, Dusty Knuckle, and Crate to Plate, a hydroponic farm south of the river, as well as products from 80 countries around the world. It’s a delight for expats (the neighbourhood is full of Americans), even if it means spending an inordinate amount on a bag of Goldfish crackers or a jar of Skippy.
Those looking for gifts can take advantage of the florist or the hamper service at Panzer’s, which vary based on the upcoming holiday. The service is efficient but friendly, and you’re likely to spot the same people in the shop over and over again if you go regularly. Not a local? It’s worth a trek for the smoked salmon alone. –Emily Zemler
